you will get cool curvy functions to use for stuff like this if you ADD rather 'unrelated' functions. for example, z= x^3 + sin(y)...functions with asymptotes tend to be prettier, in my personal aesthetic taste, and these will be hyperbolic functions (1/x for example) or tangent/arctangent and the like.
